Xiaoze Xie

Chinese artist Xiaoze Xie is best known for his large-scale works portraying the spines of rare books and stacks of newspapers. In their solitary stasis, these materials tell a story of remarkable cogency. Xie’s Chinese Library series — printed by Wildwood Press on handmade Kozo paper — took him to the basements of Chinese libraries, where tables full of ancient books sit in storage. These artifacts are too fragile to open, too damaged to be repaired, and too valuable to discard, but not too precious to record. Xie has exhibited globally and is currently an art professor at Stanford University.
